'Allow unencrypted traffic' (WinRM Service)

ID: oval:org.secpod.oval:def:40332Date: (C)2017-04-25   (M)2023-07-04
Class: COMPLIANCEFamily: windows

This policy setting allows you to manage whether the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) service sends and receives unencrypted messages over the network. If you enable this policy setting, the WinRM client sends and receives unencrypted messages over the network. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, the WinRM client sends or receives only encrypted messages over the network. Vulnerability: Encrypting WinRM network traffic reduces the risk of an attacker viewing or modifying WinRM messages as they transit the network. Counter Measure: Disable this policy setting in order to prevent WinRM from using unencrypted network traffic. Potential Impact: If you enable this policy setting, the WinRM client sends and receives unencrypted messages over the network. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, the WinRM client sends or receives only encrypted messages over the network. Fix: (1) GPO: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Remote Management (WinRM)\WinRM Service\Allow unencrypted traffic (2) REG: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WinRM\Service!AllowUnencryptedTraffic
